Things to Know if you are Hiking in Hawaii

As many of you are know, the state of Hawaii has some of the globe’s elite hiking trails. Whether you are talking about the twelve mile long unspoiled Na Pa Li/Hanakapai trail, the awesome panorama of the Sleeping Giant trail on the garden isle of Kauai or the rainforest strewn trails on the Big Isle, Molokai and Oahu, Hawaii has it all in this regard. Nonetheless, there are certain guidelines you should be aware of to help make sure that you have the top hiking experience possible. Before you go out, for example, get in your Nissan or whatever car you rented and get yourself some solid hiking footbare from a local shops and put them on prior to going for hiking. Some folks really like the ‘reefwalker’ style which can also give the dual use of being ideal for walking on the coral reef for when you are in the ocean there. You might wish to hire a tour guide to take you around your particular island or maybe you will decide to just rent a Nissan or some other type of  vehicle and check out the sights of Hawaii on your own.  You may go here if you wish to obtain a vehicle and find a Hawaii Nissan lot. In many areas of Hawaii I have noticed that Nissan seems to have the top rental deal s going, for some strange reason. All in all, Hawaii definately requires special caution with regards to the sun’s ultraviolet rays. You may want to put on a visor or even carry an umbrella. Of course you should put on a quality sunscreen with a protection rating of 30 or higher.  Putting on a light colored jacket will help to protect you against some the harmful sun rays while also keeping your body temperature in the normal range. However, perhaps the most vital thing of all is to bring a substantial quantity of drinking water. The water from streams may be infected with bacteria and may even cause certain lethal diseases, although they are realtively rare overall. You can likewise boil the water to kill the bacteria or simply use water purification tablets, however the water may not taste as good that way so beware. Timing is also an important thing to consider in arranging your activity in Hawaii. I recommend that you start your hiking in the morning when the sun just rises so that you have enough time to explore the beauty beside the track and come back in time. Hawaii is extremely close to the equator, therefore the area gets dark in short time in the evening as the sun goes down. So bring a flashlight just in case. While on the trail, if you encounter any emergency like injury, bad weather or it gets too late at night and you get stuck on the trail, 911 is the number to call and ask for help, like in other parts of the United States. They will ask about your location and then track you to reach there as soon as is feasible. Your colored dressing could naturally assist the rescue workers in reaching you. If the place, the person is in trouble is inaccessible by foot, helicopters will come to free him.   I have lived in Hawaii for a number of years and I really love the hiking trails here.

Metrolink Approves Millions For Safety

October 26, 2008 (by Otto Smyth)

According to reports Metorlink who is facing probable legal suits for wrongful death and personal injuries in the Chatsworth commuter train crash has approved millions of dollars in safety improvements.

It has been reported that the Metrolink Transportation Authority Board of Directors of Metrolink has approved safety upgrades which will cost and estimated $10.6 to $12.6 million and this will include additional engineers and conductors, along with Automatic Train Stop technology and the replacement of incandescent light bulbs on signals with light emitting diodes. The Automatic Train Stop technology is planned to be put into operation in 50 locations at an estimated cost of $1.1 million and used for the next several years until a more advanced system is available. This system has been used since the 1940’s and has receivers approximately 100 feet before each warning signal. This is an alarm that the conductor must acknowledge within an eight second time frame or the train will automatically slow and come to a stop.

The board approved additional hiring of engineers and conductors for trains running that will not have the Automatic Train Stop technology.

The Metrolink board has already allocated $5 million for the Los Angeles County safety improvements. The Metrolink Transportation Authority is the major source of funding for Metrolink and the five counties in Southern California that it operates.

Another item the board approved at a cost of $1 million was the changing of signal bulbs at 650 signals to give the higher visibility with the new bulbs. They also approved relocating or changing five signals that will be an approximate cost of $3 to $5 million.
